What Is Fiber Cement and How Is It Used on Exterior Facades?
Fiber cement is a family of board products formed by reinforcing a cement-based matrix with fibrous components. Products intended for exterior use must be distinguished from interior boards. For flat fiber cement sheets within the scope of EN 12467 / TS EN 12467+A2, the use category, durability class, dimensional tolerances, and other performance criteria are defined in the manufacturer’s technical documentation. Therefore, the term “fiber cement” alone does not mean that a product can be used on every exterior facade under all conditions; the suitability of the selected brand and series for exterior use must be verified from the current technical data sheet and declaration of performance.
In a ventilated facade application, the fiber cement board is not the building’s thermal-insulation layer by itself. The system consists of the existing wall or load-bearing surface, anchors and brackets, an aluminum or project-specific metal substructure, thermal insulation and membranes where required, a ventilation cavity, fasteners, and the fiber cement outer skin working together. When correctly detailed, controlled air movement behind the panels supports moisture management and helps the building envelope dry.
Fiber Cement Products: Through-Colored, Factory-Finished, and Site-Painted Boards
One of the most commonly confused expressions in fiber cement selection is “self-colored.” Technically, three different surface approaches should be distinguished:
1. Through-Colored / Integrally Colored Fiber Cement
In this group, the pigment is not merely a paint applied to the surface; the body or core of the panel is colored during production. The material color visible at cut edges and around drilled holes can therefore become part of the facade design. Product families such as HekimColorBoard, Tepe Unique Pro, EQUITONE [tectiva] and [natura], and Swisspearl Patina or Carat are different examples of this approach. Some products may be completely uncoated with a hydrophobized surface, while others may have a semi-transparent or protective factory finish over a colored core.
Advantages include reducing large-area painting work on site, providing a more integrated appearance at cut sections, preserving the natural mineral character, and potentially increasing installation speed. Disadvantages include color palettes being limited to the manufacturer’s series, controlled shade variation between batches and panels because of natural raw materials, and local repairs being more difficult to conceal than on a conventionally painted facade. For this reason, products used on the same facade should, as far as possible, be procured under the same production plan/batch strategy and approved through physical samples.
2. Factory-Painted or Factory-Coated Fiber Cement
In this group, the panel surface is completed under controlled factory conditions using acrylic, semi-transparent, opaque, or UV-resistant functional coatings. Product families such as EQUITONE [pictura], Swisspearl Zenor / Planea, and Cedral products are examples of factory-finished surfaces. James Hardie products with ColorPlus® Technology also represent the factory-applied color approach.
The main advantage of a factory coating is that color and surface quality are applied under controlled production conditions. Some series use high-resistance topcoats that improve resistance to scratching, soiling, or graffiti. This approach offers wide color options and a more uniform facade appearance. However, cut edges, screw/rivet heads, and scratches may need to be treated with the manufacturer’s recommended system. Repainting the panel on site with a different paint may require manufacturer approval with respect to adhesion and warranty conditions.
3. Fiber Cement Painted After Installation
Paintable boards in natural gray, cream, or production color can be painted in project-specific colors after installation, screw-head/joint detailing, and the necessary surface preparation are completed. HekimBoard exterior boards and products such as tepePAN / tepePAN Pro are examples of this approach. James Hardie products offered in some markets as “primed for paint” are also global examples of the same principle.
The main advantage is the much wider freedom available to the architect or investor when selecting colors. Color revisions during the project and future repainting may also be easier. The disadvantage is that paint quality becomes dependent on site conditions. Damp panels, dusty surfaces, incorrect primer, low temperatures, unsuitable paint, or insufficient film thickness can increase the risk of blistering, peeling, and color irregularities. Painting after installation also adds time, scaffolding/platform requirements, and labor cost.
Fiber Cement Brands and Product Series
The brand and series examples below are provided to explain the different surface and application approaches available in the fiber cement market. Since product availability, color, thickness, fire classification, installation system, and warranty conditions may vary by country and product series, the current technical documentation should always be checked at the project date.
Hekim Yapı: HekimColorBoard and HekimBoard
Hekim Yapı’s HekimColorBoard series represents the through-colored, or integrally colored, fiber cement approach. The manufacturer states that the cross-section of HekimColorBoard boards is also colored, that the boards can be used without painting, and that different surface options with plain, wood, or stone character are available. According to manufacturer technical data, A1 reaction-to-fire classifications under EN 13501-1 are available for the HekimColorBoard/HekimBoard family depending on the product series; the current documentation for the series selected for the project should be verified separately.
HekimBoard exterior boards stand out as a solution that can be painted after installation. The manufacturer states that water-based acrylic and silicone-based exterior paints may be used outdoors and that synthetic oil-based paints should not be used. The paint system can be applied after screw-head treatment and surface preparation are completed. This option is advantageous for projects requiring custom colors, while dependence on site painting conditions and the possible need for repainting in later years are disadvantages.
Tepe Betopan: Tepe Unique Pro and tepePAN
Tepe Unique Pro belongs to the group of ready-to-use, through-colored, water-repellent fiber cement boards that do not require painting. The current product page specifies important application conditions such as a minimum 10 mm board recommendation for exterior use, mandatory dry cutting, attention to production direction, and delivery of factory-cut/sized boards for facade applications. Current technical data also includes Category A, Class 3 under TS EN 12467+A2 and an A1 reaction-to-fire classification under EN 13501-1.
tepePAN and tepePAN Pro are fiber cement board options that can be finished with paint or a surface coating. The manufacturer’s application documents recommend a dry and dust-free surface, use of a suitable primer, and alkali-resistant acrylic-based exterior paints. These products provide flexibility for project-specific RAL/NCS color targets; however, the paint must be applied with the correct system and under suitable weather conditions.
EQUITONE: [tectiva], [natura], [linea], and [pictura]
EQUITONE positions its high-density fiber cement facade panels primarily for ventilated rainscreen systems. [tectiva] has a through-colored, sanded, uncoated natural mineral surface. [linea] is through-colored and creates a light-and-shadow effect with its milled three-dimensional surface. [natura] uses a semi-transparent acrylic factory finish over a through-colored core, allowing the fiber texture to remain visible. [pictura] stands out in projects requiring a more uniform, opaque, and ultra-matt color with an acrylic/UV-resistant factory coating.
EQUITONE products generally follow a “prefinished” or factory-completed surface approach. The manufacturer notes that adhesion of third-party paints may become more difficult depending on the coating type and recommends checking the compatibility and warranty implications of any subsequent paint or coating. Therefore, site painting of EQUITONE panels should not automatically be regarded as a “standard application”; it should only be considered in special cases approved by the panel manufacturer and paint manufacturer.
Swisspearl: Patina, Carat, Zenor, Planea, and Other Surfaces
The Swisspearl range includes different fiber cement surface approaches under the same brand. Patina Original NXT, Patina Rough NXT, and Patina Inline NXT are through-colored products designed to achieve a natural/patinated appearance. Carat provides a semi-transparent pigmented surface over a through-colored core. Zenor uses an opaque matt coating over a through-colored core to achieve a more uniform color, while Planea emphasizes color intensity with a strong opaque factory coating over a gray fiber cement body. Some series are also available with a high-resistance HR coating option against scratching, weathering, heavy soiling, and graffiti.
This variety within Swisspearl provides a useful design comparison: where a natural mineral/patina character is desired, through-colored and uncoated series may be preferred; where a more uniform and controlled color is required, factory-coated series may be more suitable. Because fastening methods, concealed/visible fixing, and edge treatments vary by product series, it is not correct to apply a single detail to all Swisspearl products.
James Hardie: ColorPlus and Site-Paintable Product Approaches
James Hardie is a global example that clearly offers two different finishing approaches, particularly in siding and panel products. With ColorPlus® Technology products, color is applied in a controlled factory environment and the layers are cured during production. Some other Hardie® Panel products may be supplied “primed for paint” for site painting. This makes it possible to compare factory-finished and site-paintable approaches within the same brand.
An important technical point is that the fire performance of the fiber cement core is not the same as the behavior of paint or coatings applied to the surface afterward. The manufacturer specifically notes that applied paints/coatings may be damaged or char in a fire. Where a fire classification is required, it is not sufficient to rely on the statement “fiber cement is non-combustible”; the panel + surface system + substructure + insulation layers must be assessed together.
Cedral: Factory-Colored Fiber Cement Siding and Facade Elements
Cedral, another Etex brand, is known especially for fiber cement siding/plank solutions such as Lap and Click rather than large-format flat panels. Products are supplied in a wide range of factory-applied colors, and the manufacturer emphasizes a low-maintenance approach that does not require regular repainting under normal use. The manufacturer specifies touch-up paint for cut edges and minor scratches; repainting a large surface on site may not reproduce the same surface character as the factory finish. This product family provides a different design alternative from large-format panel systems for villas, residential buildings, and facades where horizontal or vertical siding character is desired.
Through-Colored, Factory-Finished, or Painted After Installation?
There is no single “best fiber cement.” The correct choice should be made according to project expectations:
- If material continuity at cut edges and joints, a natural mineral appearance, and reduced site-painting labor are priorities, through-colored products stand out.
- If color uniformity, a richer color palette, surface protection, or graffiti/soiling resistance are priorities, factory-coated fiber cement products may be more suitable.
- If a broad project-specific RAL/NCS color selection, easy site touch-up, and future repaintability are priorities, paintable fiber cement boards can be considered.
- If a timber-siding aesthetic and horizontal/vertical plank character are targeted, Cedral or similar factory-finished fiber cement siding solutions may be selected; if a large-format modular facade is targeted, panel systems are generally more appropriate.
- In high-rise buildings or structures where wind load is critical, the decision should not be based on surface type alone; structural calculations, panel dimensions, thickness, fastening centers, and the substructure system must also be considered.
Fiber Cement Facade Installation Details
The performance of a fiber cement facade is not determined by the board alone. One of the most common mistakes is selecting the correct brand and series but treating the substructure and connection details as “standard.” The following issues should be resolved together within the project:
- Panel sizing according to wind suction/pressure loads and building height.
- Section sizes of aluminum or project-specific metal substructure profiles and bracket spacing.
- Actual capacity of the concrete, steel, infill wall, or other load-bearing surface to which the anchor is fixed.
- Arrangement of fixed and sliding fastening points in accordance with the manufacturer’s system.
- Panel edge and corner distances, pre-drilling diameters, and rivet/screw tolerances.
- Vertical and horizontal open-joint widths and controlled management of water entering behind the facade.
- A ventilation cavity behind the panels that allows uninterrupted air intake and exhaust at the bottom and top.
- Drainage and drip details at windows, doors, parapets, corners, canopies/eaves, and ground-level junctions.
- Continuity of thermal insulation and assessment of thermal bridges at bracket/anchor points within the project.
- Design of required cavity barriers and fire-stopping details in accordance with the fire strategy.
- Consideration of galvanic corrosion risk where different metals come into contact and of the relevant exterior exposure class.

Cutting, Drilling, Edge Treatment, and Fastening
Fiber cement boards can be processed using CNC equipment, suitable hand tools, or machines permitted by the manufacturer; however, the cutting method varies by product series. For example, current Tepe Unique Pro product information explicitly specifies dry cutting. On factory-coated or hydrophobized panels, cut edges may need to be treated with the manufacturer’s recommended impregnation, touch-up, or protective system. Therefore, the generalization that “no treatment is required after fiber cement is cut” is not correct.
With visible fastening, color-matched rivet or screw heads can become part of the architectural design. Concealed fastening systems provide a cleaner surface but require more precise design in terms of panel thickness, rear-anchor type, hole geometry, substructure tolerance, and manufacturer approval. Panel direction can also be important for certain sanded or grooved products; the same production direction may need to be maintained across the entire facade.
Painting Fiber Cement After Installation
On paintable fiber cement, paint should not be regarded as a final layer intended to hide panel defects. Before painting, the panel should be dry, surface dust should be removed, a suitable primer should be used, screw heads should be treated according to the product/manufacturer detail, and joints should remain open where required by the design. Some manufacturer systems recommend open joints, while other systems use dedicated joint profiles; filling every joint with sealant is not a correct general rule.
HekimBoard manufacturer information describes water-based acrylic and silicone-based paint systems for exterior use, while Tepe Betopan technical documents describe alkali-resistant acrylic-based/textured exterior paint systems. Primer and coating thicknesses recommended by the paint manufacturer for fiber cement/alkaline surfaces should be followed. Synthetic/oil-based paint or coatings not approved by the manufacturer may create risks for surface performance.
Advantages of Fiber Cement Facades
- High architectural flexibility thanks to through-colored, coated, or paintable surface options.
- Compatibility with ventilated facade systems and suitability for dry installation methods.
- Large-format panels, siding, plain, sanded, grooved, wood/stone-effect, or milled surface options.

- Suitability for modular design through CNC cutting and custom sizing.
- Potential for use in facade renovations as well as new buildings.
- Reduced need for large-area site painting in through-colored or factory-finished series.

Disadvantages of Fiber Cement Facades and Points to Consider
- Board edges can be damaged by impact or incorrect handling; disciplined palletizing, transport, and storage are required.
- Oversized panel modules and insufficient fastening can increase panel stresses under wind loads.
- Controlled shade and surface variations may occur in natural through-colored products; sample approval is important in projects expecting a uniform painted appearance.
- On factory-coated panels, touch-ups to scratches and cut edges may not exactly match the gloss/texture of the main surface.
- In systems painted after installation, paint quality depends on site climate, workmanship, and surface preparation.
- Incorrect joint detailing, insufficient ventilation cavity, or poor drainage details may cause moisture problems behind the facade.
- Because silica-containing dust may be generated when cutting fiber cement, the manufacturer’s occupational-safety and dust-control instructions must be followed.
- Fire classification should not be assumed from the material family alone; the current DoP/TSE/CE/EN 13501-1 documentation for the selected product and surface system must be checked.
Difference Between Fiber Cement, Composite Panel, Sinterflex, Mesh, and Other Facade Systems
There is no single ideal facade material for every building.
