Optimal Mimarlık completed the glass partition and double-leaf panic exit door applications at the Kabataş–Mahmutbey Metro stations as part of the Alarko Holding project. The transparent partition surfaces and escape doors were designed as an integrated system compatible with the architectural layout of the stations.
Scope of the Kabataş–Mahmutbey Metro Project
High glass partition systems were installed to separate passenger areas while preserving visual continuity and organizing the escape routes within the stations. The supporting profiles, cap profiles, connection points and panic exit doors were coordinated within the same application scope.
The system details were developed by considering the intensive use conditions within the stations, the height of the glass partitions, door openings and connections with the existing structural elements. This approach brought transparency, spatial separation and escape-route functionality together within a unified design.
How Were the 5.50-Metre-High Glass Partitions Designed?
The station glass partitions were designed with a height of 5.50 metres and a single-span configuration. The tall glazed surfaces were constructed according to capped curtain wall system principles using load-bearing profiles, pressure plates and external cap profiles.
In the single-span solution, the upper and lower connections, profile sections and glass module arrangement were evaluated as interrelated components. The cap profiles defined the glazing axes and enabled the vertical surfaces to maintain an orderly and uninterrupted appearance within the station architecture.
How Were the Structural Calculations Prepared?
The profile sections and connection details of the 5.50-metre-high system were determined according to structural calculations prepared before installation. Partition height, glass dimensions, system weight, connection spacing and the loads specified for the project were evaluated together.
The supporting profile sections and the arrangement of the upper and lower connection points were selected according to the calculation results. This enabled the loads generated by the tall glass modules to be transferred to the main connection points in a controlled manner and allowed the system to remain stable throughout its single-span height.
Which Door Hardware Was Used on the Double-Leaf Escape Doors?
The rebated, single-action double-leaf emergency exit doors integrated into the glass partitions were equipped with DORMA PHA 2500 panic hardware, a DORMA TS 93 GSR door closer system and a DORMA SR 390 mechanical door coordinator.
The DORMA PHA 2500 panic hardware, compliant with EN 1125, allows users to press the horizontal panic bar in the direction of escape, open the door leaves rapidly and reach the designated evacuation route.
The DORMA TS 93 GSR door closer system returns the opened door leaves to the closed position in a controlled manner. Door leaf dimensions, clear passage width, opening direction and perimeter connections with the glass partitions were evaluated together in the application details.
Because rebated double-leaf doors must close in the correct sequence, a DORMA SR 390 mechanical door coordinator was incorporated into the system. The surface-mounted SR 390 ensures that the inactive leaf closes first and the active leaf closes afterwards. This prevents the active leaf from closing prematurely, overlapping the inactive leaf incorrectly or preventing the door assembly from closing completely.
The DORMA SR 390 is suitable for double-leaf fire and smoke door applications and complies with EN 1158. The PHA 2500 panic hardware, TS 93 GSR door closer and SR 390 door coordinator work together to provide rapid emergency opening and controlled closing in the correct sequence.
How Were the Glass Partitions and Escape Doors Integrated?
The tall glass partition surfaces and double-leaf escape doors have different structural and operating requirements. For this reason, the door frames, perimeter profiles and glass modules were coordinated within a common axis layout.
The continuity of the glass partition profiles was maintained at the top and sides of the doors, while the junction details were designed without restricting the opening movement of the escape doors. Orderly transitions were created between the capped glass modules and the door openings, allowing architectural appearance and technical requirements to be considered together.
Installation and System Checks
During installation, the vertical axes of the tall glass surfaces, profile connections, door openings and system junctions were followed according to the application drawings. The connection arrangement of the glass partitions and the opening areas of the double-leaf doors were installed without interfering with one another.
The movement of the door leaves and the escape-direction operation of the panic bar system were evaluated together with the surrounding capped glass partition system. The tall fixed glass surfaces and the operable escape doors were therefore completed as parts of the same integrated system.
Project Result
The completed work at the Kabataş–Mahmutbey Metro stations brought together 5.50-metre-high single-span capped glass partitions and double-leaf escape doors equipped with DORMA PHA 2500 panic hardware, TS 93 GSR door closers and SR 390 door coordinators.
The project demonstrates Optimal Mimarlık’s experience in transport structures through the structural design of tall glass surfaces, the resolution of capped system details and the integration of emergency exit doors with station glass partitions.
